If you suffer from high blood pressure, you’re not alone. The “silent killer” claims the lives of millions each year around the globe. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to get your blood pressure back into a safe zone. Unfortunately, you may not like what you’re about to read. Two of the biggest and best home blood pressure remedies involve limiting your intake of salt and alcohol.
The Case Against Salt
Sodium is well known to increase blood pressure. Your target for a healthy diet should be to limit yourself to no more than 2300 milligrams a day, or less. If you’re over the age of 51, then you should revise that target down to 1500mg or less. Use this lower target value if you are African-American, or if you have heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes.

Cutting down on your sodium intake is hard, but not impossible. It starts with getting in the habit of reading food labels, not adding salt to any food you prepare, or if you do, keeping it to a minimum, and eating fewer processed foods. Basically, if it comes in a box or a can, it’s probably going to contain more sodium, so you’ll want to watch carefully and keep track of how much you’re putting into your body. Stick with fresh vegetables, not canned, and make from scratch, rather than relying on boxed, processed dinners. Your heart will thank you.

The Case Against Alcohol
Alcohol can be both good and bad for you. In small amounts, it can actually be good, potentially lowering your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. The problem is that when people start drinking, they usually don’t stop at just one, and if you overindulge, it can actually begin to have the opposite effect. Also note that if you don’t drink, then this isn’t a license to start drinking, using your blood pressure as a justification.
It’s perfectly fine to have an occasional drink, just be careful not to overdo it. You don’t want to make your blood pressure problems worse.
